About Beetles

Beetles are one of the most diverse groups of insects in Central Alabama. While most are harmless, some invade homes as nuisance pests or cause damage to stored food, fabrics, or wood.

Habits and Behavior

Beetles are attracted to light, food storage areas, and natural fibers. Some overwinter indoors, while others appear seasonally in large numbers.

Common Beetles in Central Alabama

  • Asian Lady Beetles: Cluster indoors during fall; can stain surfaces and emit odor.
  • Carpet Beetles: Larvae feed on fabrics, wool, and stored items.
  • Pantry Beetles: Infest grains, cereals, and pet food.
  • Wood-Boring Beetles: Such as powderpost beetles, which slowly tunnel through hardwood.

Identification Note

Beetles differ from other pests by their hardened wing covers (elytra). Indoors, clusters near windows or larvae in closets/pantries are common signs.
