About Spiders

Spiders are a natural part of Alabama’s ecosystem, but their presence indoors can cause concern. Most are harmless, but two medically significant species are found here.

Habits and Behavior

Spiders build webs to catch insects or actively hunt prey. Indoors, they hide in corners, basements, attics, or behind furniture. Outdoors, webs appear in gardens, trees, and sheds.

Common Spiders in Central Alabama

  • Black Widow: Glossy black with red hourglass marking; venomous but shy.
  • Brown Recluse: Tan with violin-shaped mark; prefers hidden, undisturbed areas.
  • Wolf Spiders: Large, fast-moving hunters; often enter homes accidentally.
  • House and Cellar Spiders: Build webs in corners and basements.

Risk Notes

Only black widows and brown recluses pose medical risks. Most spider bites are harmless and occur only when spiders are disturbed.
