Image

Ticks are common across Alabama, especially in wooded and grassy areas. They latch onto humans and animals to feed on blood and can transmit serious diseases.
Habits and Behavior
Ticks wait on tall grass or shrubs, then grab onto passing hosts. They are most active from spring through fall but can survive year-round in mild weather.
Common Ticks in Central Alabama
- Lone Star Tick: Aggressive species marked with a white spot; known for causing itching and meat allergies.
- American Dog Tick: Common on pets; can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
- Blacklegged (Deer) Tick: Vector for Lyme disease.
- Brown Dog Tick: Often found in kennels and homes with dogs.
Health Concerns
Tick bites may cause itching, swelling, or allergic reactions. More importantly, ticks can spread illnesses such as Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
